July: FLANEUR
Hello, journaling friends! In 2025, our monthly Cafe Analog’s friendly journaling challenge #caprojectme25 will take its prompts from beautiful words/phrases from various languages around the world! We think it will be a fun way to start the year while also allowing you to design a spread based on the essence of a word/phrase, making it very personal to you! We will also have three journaling prompts for you to choose from as a way for you to connect more with the month’s word/phrase selection!
The phrase for July is the French word, “FLANEUR”.
As summer reaches its peak and the world seems to slow down in the most delightful way, July offers a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with our city, neighborhoods, and surroundings. The word flâneur—a French term originally popularized in 19th-century Paris—embodies the art of leisurely strolling through the city, observing life with curiosity and a sense of wonder. It encourages us to slow down, pay attention, and immerse ourselves in the everyday beauty that often goes unnoticed.
At its core, the flâneur embodies a philosophy of mindful exploration. It’s about adopting a curious, open-minded attitude toward everyday life, seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary.
This month, create a spread with your stationery supplies or other materials to capture the essence of the phrase flâneur for you. If the word is a journal spread, what would it look like?
Here are some creative journaling prompts for you to choose from:
1.
THE WANDERER
Write about a recent walk you took in your city or town. Maybe even just a short walk to buy groceries or pick up a package at the post office. What sights, sounds, and smells stood out? Which colors pop up repeatedly? How did you feel on your walk? How did this experience influence your mood, creativity, or thoughts? You can also snap a picture of something that pique your interest during this walk and paste it in your journal.
2.
A WALK IN TIME
Pick an old photo or a memory… think of what you can still remember about the scene in that photo or in that memory. As far as you remember, what was the smell, sight, or sound from that scene? Who were there with you (maybe they weren’t in the photo, but you remembered they were there)? Where were you? How did you see the world back then?
3.
WALKING THROUGH OBJECTS
Have a walk in your living room or bedroom, or kitchen… and pick one object that you really like. It can be as simple as a wooden spoon, or maybe a ceramic cup, or it can be something like a painting or a carpet, or a fountain pen! Go back and try to remember where you got this object. Try to Google about this object: who made it, where it was made, how it was made, and what was the history of this object? It can be a really fun thing to find out, for instance, about the history of the first fountain pen in the world! It’s another way to “walk” around the world, across time and culture, by researching the story behind some of your favorite daily objects you have lying around your house!
Feel free to share your pages and spreads with the hashtag #caprojectme25 if you’d like others who join the project to find yours, and you can also see how others translate FLANEUR into their journal pages!
We hope these prompts will give you a sense of wonder that enriches your life during this vibrant season! So, grab your journal, take a leisurely stroll—whether physically or mentally—and see what stories the world reveals to you this July! Happy flâneur-ing!
love, H.
